Anar is a lush plant which may attain 5-7 m in height. The plant does not grow like a tree with a central trunk and spreading branches but instead produces multiple branches from the base of the plant and grows more like a bush with low hanging fruits.

It has elliptical green leaves which shed from time to time. The plant produces heavy foliage before fruiting and bears handsome axillary orange-red flowers that are borne towards the end of the branches. The fruit is the size of a large orange, obscurely six sided, with smooth leathery skin that range from brownish yellow to red.
