Akash Neem (Also known as Tree Jasmine) is a fine, fast growing tree, with brittle wood which can easily get damaged in storms. The tree grows wildly in many parts of India. The bark of the tree is often used as an inferior substitute to true cork.
The popularity of Akash Neem tree lies in it’s ornamental value rather than any shade giving properties. It can be grown as a small compact tree if trimmed properly or as a nice container plant.
The plant blooms from April until rains and then again in December. The flowers are delicate, star shaped and fall soon after opening. The tree blooms at night and sheds flowers early in the morning, carpeting the floor and filling the air around the tree with its fragrance. It is often used for worship.
According to a mythology, this is a heavenly tree brought to earth by the God Krishna. A quarrel over it ensued between Satyabhama and Rukmani. Krishna’s Wives. But Krishna planted the tree in Satyabhama’s courtyard in a way that when the tree flowered the flowers fell in Rukmani’s courtyard.
